Interview with Colleen, South Shore-based Balloon Twister

1. How did you get into balloon twisting?
I’ve always been drawn to performing arts, especially through my background in theatre at Salem State University. In 2019, I joined Kaleidoscope as a professional balloon twister, and it quickly became a passion. I loved how balloon twisting allowed me to combine my creativity with interactive entertainment, and it’s been such a rewarding experience to bring smiles to people at various events. Since then, I’ve honed my skills, and it’s become a fun and fulfilling part of my career.

2. Do you consider yourself an artist?
Absolutely! Balloon twisting is definitely an art form, just like face painting. As a balloon twister and face painter, I get to use my creativity to craft unique, colorful designs, whether it’s creating intricate balloon animals or painting detailed faces. Every event is an opportunity to showcase my artistic skills, and I love that balloon twisting allows me to think outside the box and create something memorable for each guest.

3. What are your favorite events to work?
My favorite events to work are definitely family-oriented ones, like birthday parties and community festivals. There’s something so special about seeing kids light up when they receive a custom balloon creation or a fun face painting. I also love working at fairs and larger public events where I get to interact with a wide range of people and challenge myself with more unique designs. Working with The Face Painter RI has given me the chance to participate in all kinds of fun events throughout Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts.

4. Are you local to RI?
While I live in Taunton, MA, I work all throughout Southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The Face Painter RI operates in both areas, so I regularly travel to different parts of RI for events. Even though I’m based in Massachusetts, many of the events I work are in Rhode Island, and I consider it part of my local community as well.
